Oye

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 20 October 2026

Oye is a Spanish-learning app. This page explains, in plain English, what information it handles and why. The short version: Oye has no ads, no tracking and no analytics SDKs, we never sell your data, and you can use most of the app without an account.

Who we are

Oye is run by Matthias Robinson, an individual based in the United Kingdom (“we”, “us”), who is the controller of the personal data described here. Contact: support@oyedownload.com.

What we collect, and why

Most of what you do in Oye stays on your phone: your placement test, the signals that rank your feed, free-use counters, reminders, and any saved words before you sign in. This data never leaves your device. The following does leave it:

DataWhy
Email address (optional). If you sign in with an email code or Sign in with Apple. If you use Apple’s sign-in we may also receive the name Apple shares the first time.To create and secure your account and sync your study data between devices. Sending sign-in codes uses Resend.
User ID. A random ID for your account. If you ask the free AI tutor question without signing in, a silent anonymous ID is created instead. To run the app, link your data to you, and apply tutor limits.
Device identifier. A random value stored in the iOS Keychain. It is sent to us only in hashed form, is not tied to your account, and is not used for tracking.Only to enforce the limit of one free tutor question per device.
IP address (hashed). When you ask the free tutor question, a one-way hash of your IP address is counted for that day. The address itself is not stored.Only to stop the free question being abused. Counts older than two days are deleted.
Synced study data, if you sign in: saved words and flashcards, word status, review history, watch history, streak, and settings (dialect, level, goal, preferences). To keep your progress across devices and schedule your reviews. Private to your account.
AI tutor messages: your question, the chat so far, the clip sentence and its translation, and the word you tapped. To answer you. These are sent to Anthropic (Claude) to generate the reply. We store only usage counters, not the text of your messages.
Feedback ratings on tutor answers: thumbs or stars, an optional comment (up to 500 characters), the clip, word, model and app version. To improve answers. Linked to your user ID.
Purchase status: your subscription and trial status, through Apple and RevenueCat. We never see your card details. To unlock the app and honour your trial and subscription. This also applies if you are not signed in.

What we don’t do

YouTube

Clips in Oye play in YouTube’s embedded player. When a clip plays, YouTube and Google may collect data from your device, such as identifiers or cookies, playback information and ad measurement, under their own terms and policies. That collection is not controlled by us. By using Oye you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service, and Google’s handling of data is described in the Google Privacy Policy.

Who processes data for us

We share only what each provider needs to do its job, and they may use it only to provide their service to us under their own terms.

How long we keep it

Account and synced data is kept while your account exists and is deleted when you delete it. Tutor usage counters and feedback are deleted with your account. Anonymous IDs and the hashed device value are kept only as long as needed to enforce the free-question limit. Purchase records are kept by Apple and RevenueCat as required for billing and legal reasons. Anthropic, Apple, Google and our other providers keep data under their own policies.

Deleting your data

In the app, go to Settings → Account → Delete account. This removes your account and all synced data, including cards, word status, review and watch history, settings, tutor usage and feedback. You can also email support@oyedownload.com from the address on your account and we will do it for you. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription; do that in iOS Settings (see Support).

Children

Oye is not directed to children under 13 (or under the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you think a child has given us data, email us and we will delete it.

International transfers

Our providers may process data in countries other than yours, including the United States. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or equivalent mechanisms.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the UK GDPR or California’s CCPA/CPRA) you can ask us for access to your data, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to some processing, and to receive a copy. We do not sell or share personal information for advertising. Most of this you can do yourself in the app (including exporting your words from Settings); otherwise email support@oyedownload.com. We use your data to provide the app you asked for (contract) and to keep it secure and fair to use (legitimate interests). You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority: in the UK that is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk), or the authority where you live.

Changes

If we change this policy in a meaningful way we will update the date above and, where appropriate, tell you in the app.
